I generally don’t watch the Oscars because I don’t see movies and don’t have an opinion about who “should” win. If I went to, say, NASCAR races, or roller derbies, or cryptographers’ conventions, perhaps I’d have opinions about who should come out on top in in those, too. But I don’t. Somehow everyone else has a really well-informed opinion about movies, but mine always seems less informed. I leave it to the Academy to give former Vice Presidents and Melissa Etheridge Oscar awards.
[I'll take my tongue out of my cheek now, so don't get me wrong -- I thought "An Inconvenient Truth" was a great documentary. It was the last movie I saw in a theater (admittedly about six months after it came out), and one I happened to enjoy not just for the popcorn. I don't have anything in particular against Al Gore, political, personal, or otherwise. But I'm putting him in the category in my head that started to take form when Phil Collins got an Oscar for scoring a cartoon . I'm sure that's incredibly difficult to do, but what better way to de-legitimize your profession than by making Phil Collins its crown prince... Has the Academy not seen all the underappreciated talent drinking on Bedford?]
Oh. Sorry. Why the post? A few Oscar-related thoughts:
(1) Jennifer Hudson is so !&$#@ hot.
(2) So is Jodie Foster. I’d still rub the lotion on your skin in my panic room, Sadie. (BTW: Reese Witherspoon is getting that same weird angular jaw thing that JF’s got. Bummer.)
(3) So when you win for best documentary, what are you winning for, really? I ask this seriously, not sarcastically, because if you think about it, it’s kind of a weird category. I mean, do you… Highlight more, um, non-fiction in your film? Be “more factual” than the other guys? Light your shots better? Have a better score? Be more timely or contemporaneous in your subject matter in the eyes of people who get to vote? The end result seems to be more than the sum of its parts, and I’m curious as to what the Academy considers.
(4) How many necks does George Lucas have under that collar?
